All
first grade students will be taught the following skills through the use of
direct instruction. Which will be best tailored to your child's specific areas
of need.
By the end
of First Grade your child should:
- Understand and use greater than, less than and equal to in
comparing numbers and sets.
- Know how to recognize and create patterns using symbols,
numbers and
objects.
- Use the commutative property of addition.
- Understand and use +, -,and = signs to write and solve math problems.
- Describe a situation where you would add or subtract.
- Understand that symbols can represent unknown numbers.
- Show how to group sets.
- Identify basic attributes of plane and solid figures.
- Explain proximity of an object in space.
- Understand perspective.
- Divide shapes into equal parts and identify its fraction.
- Tell time: nearest hour, half hour and quarter hour.
- Understand the difference between length, weight, volume, and temperature
and how to find each.
- Explain concept of equivalence.
- Compare and order objects by measurement.
- Identify measurement tools and when to use each.
- Identify and record temperatures.
- Figure the area and perimeter of squares using #'s and counting cubes.
