By the end of first grade your child
will:
- Identify through biographies and stories, the
admirable deeds performed by past leaders, such as: Helen Keller, Ben
Franklin, Martin Luther King, Clara Barton, Alexander Graham Bell,
Thomas Edison, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln.
- Compare the lives of people and events associated
with major holidays, including Native American Day, Thanksgiving,
Veterans and Memorial Day, Independence and Presidents Day.
- Recall people and events from the past and make
inferences about everyday life of the time period.
- Compare everyday life in school and community and
recognize that people, places, and things change over time.
- Construct a simple map using a map key and
and least 3 symbols.
- Use a globe to identify cardinal directions, the
four oceans, the United States, South Dakota, and the local
community.
- Using and drawing a simple picture map to locate home and school
addresses.
- Recognize attributes and consequences of
citizenship that apply to family, school, and community units, such as
respecting roles for authority, following rules created for the
protection of all, and accepting consequences of rules.
- Recognize political roles of leaders in the larger
community, such as the mayor, the governor, the legislators, the
congressmen, senators, and the president.
- Differentiate between paid worker and a volunteer.
- Acknowledge American symbols and Landmarks and
important documents such as;the American flag, the bald eagle, the pledge of allegiance, the Lincoln
Memorial and Washington monument.
- Describe the differences between human resources
(people at work); natural resources (water, soil, wood, coal, etc.);
and capital resources (machines, tools, etc.) used to produce goods or
services.
- Explain the differences between goods and services
and how people are both buyers and sellers of goods and
services.
- Explain that limits on resources require people to
make choices about producing and consuming goods and services.
